When it comes to nail trends, we’ve been ricocheting between the super clean Vanilla French and its gothic sibling of late. But Selena Gomez’s flower nails have just raised the bar with manicure inspiration that is pure upside and joy. There’s even a side helping of 70s nostalgia thrown in for good measure.
Better still, they’re serving up a tantalising reminder that Spring is just around the corner, which is precisely what we are craving after months of subzero temperatures and exhausting TikTok’s “I’m Cold Makeup” trend.
Posting a photograph of Selena’s nails on his Instagram, celebrity manicurist Tom Bachik reveals how the actress’ tips have been filed into an almond shape, which immediately creates a softer feel than the stiletto nails flooding our feeds.
Each nail bears intricately-defined yellow, purple and blue floral nail art, which, were it not for the gold accents, look so realistic you’d think pressed petals had been shellacked onto her nails.
Given Tom has recently gone viral for his various manifestations of lipgloss nails and nude manicures, this degree of colour and art school-level painterly vibes immediately caught our eye on his feed.
But what stops the look from straying into the coquette aesthetic, which is partial to hyper-femininity and an intentionally over-pretty floral, is the use of black rather than a pastel for the base. It’s also a nod to the “goth glam” beauty looks, which are dominating the A/W23 catwalks right now, where copious amounts of black eyeliner are being either smudged around model’s eyes or painted on for dramatic wings.
All of which is to say, don’t just bookmark this page for the sunnier days ahead. While this manicure clearly references Spring flowers, you don’t have to wait to hit up your nail technician for the look. It’s pitch-perfect for right now. By paying homage to darker elements, Selena Gomez’s flower nails kick up the cool factor a notch so they won’t look out of place paired with chunky boots and a black leather jacket at this time of year.
